Book Review of The Little French Bistro by Nina George

Sixty-year-old Marianne Messmann has had enough of her loveless, one-sided marriage of forty plus years. Lothar Messman is an overbearing oaf who has no idea how to show Marianne the love and affection she so desperately wants. For far too long, Marianne has blamed herself and when she becomes overwhelmingly despondent during their Paris vacation, she wanders off to end it all. When her suicide doesn’t go as planned, Marianne uses the near death experience to embark on an adventure of self-discovery and reinvention.

I read Nina George’s “The Little Paris Bookshop” and was less than enthusiastic about it. In it, George writes from the male perspective and I couldn’t find it convincing or compelling. The Little French Bistro, by comparison, was fabulous. Writing from the female perspective, to me, makes the author’s voice so much more believable and enjoyable.

The Little French Bistro brings a lovely cast of characters together. The 60+ crowd has great deal of experience with life, love and loss to teach younger generations and this theme shines through beautifully in this book. I loved every single character here. The author does a wonderful job of creating believable, likable characters that peel away layers to reveal their genuine hopes, dreams, thoughts, feelings and faults.

I can’t say enough good things about The Little French Bistro. It’s definitely worth reading and the characters will stay with you long after you’ve finished. Thanks to the publisher and the now defunct Blogging for Books for a complimentary copy.

Free Christian Romance Novel - Dream with Me, Cowboy by Debra Clopton

Here's another FREE Amazon book. This one is a fun Christian romance by Debra Clopton. Definitely worth the download!

DIY Mom Review:

Lacy Brown drives from Dallas and arrives in Mule Hollow, Texas after reading a “wives wanted” newspaper ad. Lacy thinks she’s going to be the town’s new matchmaker, but God has other plans for her.

This was a sweet and fun Christian romance novel. It’s fewer than three hundred pages, and the author’s engaging, fast-paced writing keeps the story moving nicely. I breezed through it in an afternoon.

The characters are genuine and likable. I enjoyed the storyline even if it was a tiny bit predictable in spots. There were plenty of additional subplots and supporting characters within the story to keep readers interested.

If you like fun, clean romance novels, then you’ll love this one.

Things My Mother Taught Me Zine - Turn Your Card Stock Scraps into Accordion-Fold Zines

Here's a use for your card stock scraps. This one measures 2.75 x 4.5 when closed, and is folded into four equal pages to create an 8-page zine. I pasted some basic sketches to the pages, added some sayings I printed off from my computer and now I have another mini zine to keep, trade or give away as a gift.

An Inspiring and Uplifting Novella by Rosemary Hines - "From the Heart" is a 5 Star Read

Eighty-six year old Joan Walker has loved only one man throughout her life. Phil was a pastor and a wonderful, loving husband. Unfortunately, cancer has taken Phil away from Joan and she’s left to go on without him. Although Joan has her own pastor and his wife to help her when necessary, Joan struggles to find her way in her new life without Phil.

From the Heart is probably one of the sweetest stories I’ve read in a long time. Rosemary Hines does a wonderful job of expressing the heartbreak experienced by a grieving widow. This is a lovely story, filled with positive affirmations that many of us can learn from. Even when something as traumatic as the death of a spouse occurs, we can still find solace in helping others. Ms. Hines turns a painful tale of loss into one of hope and comfort.

I would highly recommend reading this book and grabbing the series. I’ve already downloaded Book 1 and intend to do just that!

Quirky, Cute and Funny - Book Review of "Finding Fraser" by K C Dyer

Are you looking for a cute contemporary romance novel? I just finished "Finding Fraser" by K C Dyer and I loved it! It's a quick read and filled with likable characters. My book review is below.

Emma Sheridan is on the cusp of her 30th birthday and she’s decided to do something daring. After selling everything she owns, she books a flight to Scotland in search of her very own Jamie Fraser – heroic hunk and star of the Diana Gabaldon's “Outlander” book series. Emma has been woefully unlucky in love and although she’s clearly venturing out of her comfort zone she’s determined to see her plan through.

Who doesn’t remember being almost thirty and trying to find ourselves? To a certain degree, I could relate to Emma’s end-of-twenties-crisis. Although my cusp of 30 included a knucklehead (ex) husband and three children, which leads me to my only real “criticism” of Finding Fraser. I found Emma’s character to be quite immature for twenty-nine. She was also overly naïve and slightly neurotic. Yet, Emma’s “quirky” personality made the story work so well that I was quickly able to go with it.

Yes, Finding Fraser was a little silly at times and the coincidences were a tad unrealistic, but it’s fiction and I honestly enjoyed it. There were a number of laugh out loud moments that managed to avoid being cheesy or slapstick. The author’s writing is wonderfully suited to this genre. The book flows nicely and the characters are well-developed. My favorite character was Jack. I found him absolutely charming and vulnerable. Morag was a likable, tough broad and Ash was a sweetheart. I wanted to slap Hamish and Sophia…Hamish for being such a big jerk and Sophia for being such a nagging shrew. So all in all I’d say I had no trouble at all connecting with the characters.

I would recommend this book even if you haven’t read any of the Outlander books. Finding Fraser doesn’t rely heavily on Diana Gabaldon’s books. In fact you don’t really have to know much at all about them. Ms. Dyer’s descriptive passages paint a beautiful picture of Scotland so that made it easier to understand the history and landscape. Worth the read!

All the Ways to Express My Love by Christina Johnson Shares a Lovely and Positive Message for Children

I adore children’s books, especially books that have a positive and encouraging message to share with the children in my life. That’s why, when I spotted a free promo for one of Christina Johnson’s books, I knew I had to grab it. I wasn’t sorry that I did!

All the Ways to Express My Love is a sweet book about expressing love to the most important people we know – our children. A colorful and eye-catching illustration is included on each page, along with an uplifting sentiment. The author portrays just about every mood children (and adults) can go through, yet our love remains constant. What a lovely and reassuring thing for children to know!

Christina Johnson has written many children’s books. I’m almost embarrassed to admit that, prior to taking advantage of this free promo, I hadn’t heard of her. Well, now that I have I’m certainly going to seek out all of her books. I’ve even signed up for her awesome newsletter.

Parents should know that Ms. Johnson includes some great additional info to find on her website at the conclusion of All the Ways to Express My Love – including a free book download and free printables. I just found another children’s book author to follow! Highly recommended!

*Grab this book while you can, since it's still FREE!

Book Review of Semi Serious by Charlotte Stone

Charlotte Stone had been a teacher for almost two decades when she decided to make a sudden and dramatic career change. After a casual conversation with her truck driver son-in-law, Charlotte spontaneously decided to go into the trucking business as well. After enrolling in training school and getting hired on by a company, Charlotte found that her new life provided a great deal of quiet time – time that she used to reflect on life, and to get closer to God and her faith. In Semi Serious, Ms. Stone talks about just some of what she learned while out on the road.

Semi Serious is a short book, yet it’s packed with a variety of uplifting, engaging and encouraging content. The author tells of her life on the road in a practical and easygoing style, which I enjoyed. She adds a great deal of interesting information about what it’s like to be a female long-haul trucker in a male-dominated industry. Ms. Stone also adds some lovely poetry, photos, scripture and devotionals. But at the heart of this book is the importance of finding and keeping one’s faith, regardless of the roadblocks that might be put in front of us.

It’s clear that Charlotte Stone is a devout woman of faith. However, I didn’t find Semi Serious to be preachy or overly “religious” at all. Ms. Stone reminds us of the importance of keeping our hearts and minds open to God daily, no matter how challenging and unexpected things may seem at the time. It’s all part of His individual plan for us.

Some of the stories included in this book touched my heart and spoke to me and for that, I’m grateful that I had the opportunity to read it. Semi Serious is a beautiful testimony of one woman’s strong faith and personal walk with Jesus, but with a definite unique twist to be sure. I highly recommend it!

Book Review of The Doctor's Unexpected Family by Kristen Ethridge

Do you love to read? I know I do! If you enjoy losing yourself in a good inspirational romance novel while the kiddos nap, I highly recommend "The Doctor's Unexpected Family" by Kristen Ethridge.

The Doctor's Unexpected Family by Kristen Ethridge
My Review:

Dr. Pete Shipley is a charismatic and charming physician, but he’s closed his heart to the idea of ever falling in love. Even years after the death of his beloved fiancé, Pete still can’t imagine himself loving another woman again.

Meanwhile, City Counselwoman, Angela Ruiz has plenty of issues going on in her life as well. She’s a single mom to adorable Celina, and she’s struggling to help her Port Provident, Texas community rebuild after a devastating and destructive hurricane. Angela is far too busy to even think about romance…until Dr. Shipley comes into her life.

To be perfectly honest, I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this book nearly as much as I did. Although I do appreciate an inspirational romance novel every now and then, it’s a difficult genre to pull off without coming across as overly preachy, or even cheesy and sappy. However, Ms. Ethridge has woven a truly lovely and touching tale of hope, faith and love. Her characters are so well-developed and likable, I found myself genuinely caring about how things turned out for them.

“The Doctor’s Unexpected Family” is a story that has the ability to speak to the reader’s heart. There are several uplifting and inspiring passages that incorporate sincere faith-based undertones that are really very moving and poignant. The encouraging concept that people often come into your life at the very moment you truly need them is at the heart of this wonderful book. I absolutely loved “The Doctor’s Unexpected Family” and would recommend it highly!

Blog for Fun and Profit

So you have a blog and happily post as often as you possibly can. You write about things that are important to you. You share funny stories about your children, spouse, co-workers, neighbors. Maybe you even use your blog as a way to let off some steam. Unhappy with the customer service you’ve received at your local superstore? Write about it. Your boss is a jerk? Write about him (leaving out his or her name of course). Your husband constantly leaves the toilet seat up or hogs the remote? Share all the irritating details on your blog. There are literally millions of blogs out there in cyberspace so why shouldn’t you be joining in on the blogging fun?

It's Free and Easy

There are many reasons why you should consider starting a blog. Many free blog sites exist so there’s no financial commitment to make. Register, choose a theme and begin posting. It’s as easy as that. As mentioned above, blogging is a good way to share your life with others.

Staying in Touch with Friends and Family via Blogs

Families set up blogs where each member has a chance to post updates to let relatives near and far know what’s going on in their lives. Include photos and videos and it’s almost like being there with your loved ones.

Blogs are a Great Career Move

If you’re looking to change careers or are currently out of work you should consider creating a blog. Include a resume page and links to relevant accomplishments and you can advertise yourself via your blog easily with one click. This is definitely an overlooked free marketing strategy for job seekers.

Blogs as Extensions of a Website

Do you have a business website? If the answer is yes, you should absolutely include a blog on your site. Write articles and how-to’s related to your business field and your customers will appreciate the added information.

Let’s say you own a tree trimming business and you have a business website. You can write articles about types of trees to plant, the best time to trim and prune, known diseases prevalent in certain varieties of trees, how to start a leaf compost bin, and on and on. Inviting readers to leave comments and questions gives you the opportunity to put in a good word for your company.

Affiliate Marketing Opportunities

Blogs can be money makers all on their own. Most, if not all, free blogging sites do not allow advertising on blogs. But if you purchase your own domain you can include money-making ads on your blog. There are numerous pay-per-click and affiliate programs available online. By placing company ads on your blog you make money when a visitor to your site clicks on an ad and/or buys a product from the company. You most likely will not get rich doing this but you get paid for doing very little and that’s a pretty good thing. If you have several ads going on each page of your blog you up the ante that much more.

Submitting Your Site to Search Engines

In order to make money from advertising on your blog you need to bring visitors to your site. Submitting your blog to search engines is key. An often overlooked method to bring visitors to your site is to write articles. There are many article network sites where you can submit articles on literally any topic. Your information, including your website address, appears with the article and that translates to free advertising for your site. I will go into more detail on this technique in future articles.

Blogging can be fun, an expressive outlet, a marketing tool and a money maker. Once you start blogging you’ll begin to look at things in an entirely different light. News reports, radio programs, even a trip to the grocery store can all be fodder for your blog writing. Keeping a small notebook and pen with you at all times helps you remember little tidbits of everyday life than can be written about later. Happy blogging!
