Book Review of Marital Advice to My Grandson Joel by Peter Davidson

I love sharing stories about family relationships, parents and grandparents. When I found out that Marital Advice to My Grandson, Joel was written by a loving grandfather to his newly engaged grandson I knew I had to take a closer look.

I have a soft spot for grandparents, since my own grandparents were such important role models in my life. How wonderful that someone would take the time to impart tons of grandfatherly wisdom! 

According to the books's sell sheet, "The original goal was to provide upbeat advice to the author's grandson about his role in his upcoming marriage and how to be a proper husband.  Now, as a book, the goal remains the same but the audience includes all men, whether they are engaged, married, or single.  Women will enjoy the insight and humor of the book and will appreciate the book's message."

Here's my review of Marital Advice to My Grandson, Joel...

What began as a personal blog, written by a grandfather to his grandson, turned into the book “Marital Advice to My Grandson, Joel”. Written in a conversational, thoughtful and often humorous style, author Peter Davidson shares his life experience with his recently engaged grandson Joel.

Each chapter begins with a lovely quote. The guidance, advice and sentiments are charming and heartfelt. The idea of this book is inspiring. I was impressed with the amount of time and effort the author put into this endeavor. What a wonderful keepsake for Joel and his new bride – truly something to cherish forever.

While Marital Advice to My Grandson Joel is a beautiful memento for the author’s grandson and his wife, it’s not a book geared only toward two specific people. It’s a book that contains plenty of valuable information and insight for any couple beginning a life of wedded bliss! 

Kudos to the author and best wishes to Joel and Abby. The book is proof positive that older generations have much to teach younger generations. Thanks so much to the author for providing a complimentary copy of this book!

Marital Advice to My Grandson, Joel is author Peter Davidson's twenty-ninth published book.  His works include novels, non-fiction, college textbooks, and children's picture books that have been published by McGraw-Hill Book Company, Perigee/Putnam Publishers, Sweet Memories Publishing, Haworth Press, and others. 

Middle Graders are Sure to Love Zelda the Pug and Her Latest Adventures

The adventures of Zelda the Pug continue in this installment. Readers meet the newest member of the family, Peach, who is a Boston terrier. Zelda and Peach live with Lucy, Ben and their parents Nate and Hannah. There are sixteen brief chapters in this book for middle graders to read and enjoy.

This book will especially appeal to dog lovers and pet owners. Zelda’s stories are full of action, humor and cute pet antics. Everything young readers look for in a chapter book. The author has done a wonderful job of giving children the opportunity to see the world from the perspective of a dog.

There’s also valuable information within these stories. Introducing a new pet to the family can sometimes have its challenges and Zelda’s reluctance to share with Peach certainly demonstrates this.  I could see families reading this book together before considering getting another pet. There’s even an epilogue from the POV of Peach, which gives some insight into what it’s like to be a shelter dog and to finally be adopted by a loving family. I found this to be a sweet and touching addition to the book.  

This is a nice mix of easy reading, with plenty of challenging words thrown in as well. The author’s writing is certainly kid-friendly and fun.
