Who Wants to Fish by Sally Huss Teaches Kids About Teamwork While Working On Math Skills

This book tells the tale of a “group of crazy fishing folks” who live on the shore of the sea. Their task is to fill a vat with fresh fish to make into their favorite fish dish, but they have to catch them first. From there it’s just a matter of deciding how many fish each person must catch in order to fill the vat.

As usual, Sally Huss has written an adorable multi-purpose tale for children. Not only will children learn the concept of working together for a common goal, but they’ll be learning math skills as well. I can see a preschool teacher using a felt board of fish cutouts to do this.

The story rhymes in a subtle manner and kids should get a kick out of the back and forth exchanges between the characters. The illustrations are simple, colorful and comical.

I really appreciate Ms. Huss’s ability to come up with new and clever ways to entertain and educate children by writing her “Happy Books”. Wonderful job!

Trying Something New Can Be Scary, But Fun - Book Review of "How the Cow Jumped Over the Moon" by Sally Huss

Encouraging children to try something new can be difficult. (This can be said for many adults too.) Children's author, Sally Huss, has written a unique twist on the cow jumping over the moon to teach children how much fun it can be to try something new. 

This is a cute story that has an original take on the "Hey Diddle Diddle" nursery rhyme, where the cow jumps over the moon. The cow in this case is content to stand around, chewing and chewing because as she thinks it's what she's supposed to do. Several animals stop by to encourage her to try something new, but she refuses.

Finally, a very persuasive chicken stops by to invite the cow to jump over the moon with her and she won't take no for an answer. Will the cow take a chance and try something new? You'll have to read the book to find out.

The only reason I didn't give it a full five stars is because I would have liked it if the entire book rhymed or didn't rhyme. I think it would have flowed better. But it's still a sweet little story to read to the kids!

If I Were a Rainbow by Sally Huss Really is a Happy Book!

If I Were a Rainbow is another charming and uplifting children's book from Sally Huss. I love the variety of ways Ms. Huss is able to convey her positive messages in her books. She uses simple, yet descriptive prose that even the youngest child will surely appreciate. The illustrations are absolutely adorable!

In my experience, children particularly enjoy books that repeat a certain word or phrase. Studies have shown that repetition can actually help children learn. "If I Were..." is used throughout this book and storytellers can take full advantage of this repetitive phrase.

"If I Were a Rainbow" would make an excellent circle time, library story time or bedtime book that children will ask for over and over again. Wonderful!

My Mother's Wings by Sally Huss Helps Children Cope With Military Deployment and Separation

With so many children going through the difficult experience of being separated from a parent who is serving in the military, this book certainly is timely. Author Sally Huss has provided a wonderful way to discuss these challenges with children of any age.

“My Mother’s Wings” addresses the feelings that I’m sure many military families must contend with during deployment. The boy in this book feels sad when his mother must leave, of course, but his mother gives him a beautiful way to cope. She presents him with his very own wings in the form of a pin. He then goes on to help other children who are in the very same position as himself. What a wonderfully positive way to empower a child!

The illustrations in this book are simple, yet colorful, cute and eye-catching. They’re sure to capture the attention of even the youngest child.

I’d recommend this book to anyone dealing with a military family situation – or any type of parent/child separation for that matter. Highly recommended!
