Book Review of The Gift by Rebecca Hubbard

Pip is an eleven-year-old girl who is happy when she receives a colt for her birthday. She names him Buck and sets out to make him her new best friend, since she naturally assumes she’s found one in her young horse. Pip grows increasingly frustrated when Buck pays little attention to her and gallops away whenever she gets too close to him.

Pip’s dad helps her to understand that befriending a horse takes time and she needs to be patient. Will Pip and Buck eventually become friends? What if we could see the friendship progress not only through Pip’s eyes, but also through Buck’s eyes as well? I loved this sweet and unique book! What a wonderful way to teach children about horses, friendship and patience! I adored the way the second half of the book is told from Buck’s POV. Brilliant!

Buck’s descriptions of Pip as a “pipsqueak”, with a black mane and screechy voice made me chuckle. I’m certain children will get a kick out of this. It’s obvious that Rebecca Hubbard knows a lot about horses. I’d never thought about seeing things from a horse’s perspective, but it makes perfect sense when it comes straight from the horse’s mouth.

I could definitely see The Gift used as a stepping-stone when teaching children in a classroom setting, prior to beginning riding lessons or simply one on one at home. The illustrations are lovely and wonderful accompaniments to the story. I highly recommend The Gift!

AUTHOR GUEST POST

“Why I write” by Rebecca Hubbard

Writing has been a part of my life since early elementary school. I remember writing my first poem on fat lined school paper. I do not remember what my first poem was about but I recall writing to understand the things I was experiencing in my life. I also wrote about nature and things I wondered about. If I wasn’t on a horse or reading a book, then I was writing something. Growing up, writing was a salve and a constant companion. I did not start writing for others until I was a therapist. As a therapist I began using my writing skills to help my young clients cope with traumas and difficult experiences. This started out with me telling them very short stories. Then I started writing short stories that they could take home. My first story of this nature was called “Sneaky Pee.” My process evolved into creating stories for a larger audience of children.

My passion is writing stories for children who do not have books that reflect the trauma that happened to them. I want all children who have experienced traumatic events to be able to find a book that helps them feel that they are not alone, and gives them hope that they can feel better. It is an honor to shed light on the problems children face and on their resilient and beautiful spirits. The majority of the stories I have written are to be used in a therapeutic setting. These stories do not have a publisher so they are not available at this time. While the “The Gift” leans itself to as a therapeutic story, it also stands alone simply as a children’s book. enjoy writing stories that help children grow and learn about themselves and the world around them. I know I will continue to write these types of stories, as well as the ones that are more specialized. I cannot imagine my life without writing stories for children. It is an honor and a privilege to give a voice to children who feel they do not have one.

The Gift by Rebecca Hubbard is a Useful Book for Teaching Children About Patience, Friendship, Trust and Love

I recently had the pleasure of reading and reviewing an awesome children’s book titled “The Gift”, written by licensed family therapist Rebecca Hubbard. I was so impressed with the way this book is written that I realized right away The Gift is much more than simply a children’s book. It’s a valuable lesson about friendship, trust and love, which will appeal to a wide variety of readers.

When I finished reading, my mind was already formulating the many ways this book could be incorporated into any number of programs that benefit children and their families. It turns out I was absolutely on track with my assessment. When I contacted Ms. Hubbard, I found out that The Gift has indeed been used successfully in a variety of therapeutic ways.

According to Rebecca Hubbard, “The Gift has been successfully used many times since it's publication. A parent told me that he uses the concepts in the book with his teenage daughter every day. He says to his daughter, “You are Pippin’” when he senses she needs to regulate herself and approach a situation or others with a calmer energy.

A teacher related that she and her class had a very in-depth conversation about how Pip’s thoughts were far from accurate when assessing Buck’s behavior. She said that this led to a class discussion about the importance of listening and paying attention to the perspective and feelings of other people.

Some of my therapist friends use this book to teach their clients about how our thoughts affect our behavior and feelings, and how our thoughts can sometimes become distorted. Personally, I like to use The Gift to help adults reinforce compassion when helping children through difficult situations.”

When discussing why she chose Pip’s father as the book's parental figure Ms. Hubbard explains, “I think one of the most powerful relationships in the book is the relationship between Pip and her father. Though the father is a minor character, he is the glue that holds the story together. He is also the glue in Pip’s life. Without him, she would not be able to navigate developing a friendship with Buck. Often in the media, the mother is the most attuned and compassionate.I felt it was important to represent an attuned relationship between a father and a daughter.

When defining the friendship aspect of The Gift Rebecca says, “This book can help children learn about perseverance and the importance of working for what you truly want. Friendships are a beautiful part of life. They also present many joys and challenges. It is difficult to learn how to develop a healthy friendship, to value another for who they are and not who we want them to be, and how to learn to work through problems. As Pip learns, friends are not ready-made and seeing someone for who they truly are is an amazing gift.”

I could see The Gift being used by parents who are in the process of choosing a rescue pet for their child. Just as many adults enter new relationships with past emotional baggage, rescued pets and shelter animals do as well – often much more baggage than they can handle. Children who understand this prior to choosing a pet will be more understanding and patient. What a wonderful way to prepare a child for this new experience!
